Surviving a Job Layoff: How to Move Forward
Experiencing job loss can be an emotionally challenging and unpredictable time in one's life. Last week, one of our friend who had been working at Meta, and she shared with us that she was unexpectedly laid off and was taken aback and stunned by the news (she was about to be promoted soon). However, whether you were let go due to performance, budget cuts, downsizing, restructuring, or other reasons, it is common to feel a range of intense emotions.
The news can often come as a shock and can leave you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and uncertain about the future. The process of losing a job can cause significant changes in your daily routine and financial situation, which can further increase stress levels. However, there are steps you can take to navigate the situation and move forward 💪!
Re-evaluate your financial situation: 💰 Make sure to assess your financial situation and determine how long you can sustain yourself without a steady income. (usually big tech firm laid off will offer severance package). Cut back on expenses and consider applying for unemployment benefits or other financial assistance programs could be a good way to go as well.
Allow yourself time to process your emotions: This is one of the most important things you should do to yourself! Losing a job can be a significant loss, and it's essential to take time to process your emotions and prioritize self-care. Some may feel that they did not deserve to lose their job or do not even know the real reason that got laid off. Temporarily, the best thing we can do is to seek support from friends, family, or a therapist.
Build your network: After taking some time off to recover, it's important to start getting back into the job market. Utilize your personal and professional networks to seek job leads and referrals, and attend some online/offline job fairs/communities and networking events to connect with potential employers and industry professionals. These steps can help you get back on track and find new career opportunities! 🔗
Get back into the job market and apply: Networking and referred by a friend is a good way but developing a strategic approach to job hunting by crafting a strong resume and targeting top companies that are currently hiring is definitely a good way to go as well. Conduct research to identify companies that align with your career goals and values, and keep an eye out for job openings that match your skill set. Staying up-to-date on the latest hiring trends (or subscribing to resources like snowflair 😊).
Be honest and transparent: Job loss has become increasingly common, and it can be frustrating to not know the true reason for being laid off. Despite this, it's important to maintain honesty and transparency in your job search and conversations with potential employers. Being upfront about your previous job loss can help to build trust and establish a positive relationship with future employers on the early stage and don’t waste each other time. Consider how damaging it would be for recruiters or hiring managers to discover news of your layoff through other channels or back channels, and we definitely do not want to see this happen, it's the last thing we want to encounter
Friendly reminder from snowflair!

Is Now a Good Time to Switch Jobs if You're Currently Employed?
During a volatile job market, it can be more challenging to find a new job, as many companies may have hiring freezes or layoffs. However, there may also be new opportunities emerging in industries that are experiencing growth or adaptation to new market conditions (the hot wave of AI). As a job seeker, it's essential to take a proactive and strategic approach to your job search to increase your chances of success. (come ask snowflair!)
First off, let’s consider looking for job openings in industries that are experiencing growth or increased demand 📈. For instance, healthcare, technology, and e-commerce are all industries that have continued to grow. Conduct research on industries that are seeing growth and determine which ones align with your skills and interests.
Continuously up-skilling yourself is another wise decision. Take the time to identify areas where you can improve and gain new skills or certifications that can make you more attractive to potential employers. Online courses, certification programs, and bootcamps can be great resources for gaining new skills that are in high demand. For example, even if you don't have a computer science background, there are many online resources available that can teach you how to code. By enhancing your skills in this way, you can set yourself apart from other job candidates and increase your chances of securing a new job.
Moreover, when considering potential job opportunities, it is important to evaluate the stability and growth potential of the company 🔑. While compensation is a significant factor, we suggest that it should not be the sole focus. Instead, prioritize companies that have a solid financial foundation and a clear growth strategy, as this indicates a greater likelihood of long-term job security and opportunities for advancement (If you require visa sponsorship, it's extremely important to do a deep research on the company's stability before considering any job offer.) On another note, we highly recommend conducting a thorough evaluation during the interview process, especially by engaging in conversations with the company's leadership and hiring manager. This will give you a clear understanding of your project scope, growth opportunities, and potential impact on the company as a whole (You should interview the company as well, and we strongly encourage all of our students to take this action). By taking this approach, you can make a more informed decision that aligns with your career goals and values.
Last but no least, network strategically. We have mentioned multiple times about the “networking”, and please don't underestimate the power of strategic networking. It has become an essential tool in the job search process. Tap into your personal and professional networks to inquire about job openings or ask for referrals. These people are the more trustworthy groups close to you. They could provide first hand insights on the company growth aspect, headcount and more critical insights! Building a strong network can definitely increase your chances of finding job opportunities that align with your skills and experience, and could potentially lead to unexpected opportunities in the future. 💯
